Diving & Snorkeling at Shark Point & Anemone reef

Best Diving, snorkeling and fun dive day trips at Shark Point and Anemone Reef

When considering a scuba diving day trips to Thailand, many divers think of the Similan Islands in the northern Andaman Sea, but scuba divers found that the southern islands have just as much to offer. Sloping coral reefs, clifflike vertical walls, submerged pinnacles, caverns and dramatic swim-throughs in the south teemed with life. Abundant cleaning stations offered opportunities to interact with creatures great and small. Diverse schools of fish orchestrated visual symphonies of flow and function amid dramatic underwater topography. Anemone Reef and Shark Point are collectively known to rival the Similan Islands in term of scuba diving interests.

Anemone Reef and Shark Point are considered to be one of the top scuba diving destination in Phuket and Thailand. Soft corals and sea fans cover the pinnacle at Anemone Reef. We were lucky enough to find a tigertail seahorse, short-tailed pipefish and an ornate map pufferfish. On the three pinnacles of Shark Point we relished several minutes watching a young golden trevally sifting through the gill slits of a very patient leopard shark.

Scuba diving day trip and snorkeling - Anemone Reef

Anemone Reef is a submerged pinnacle with its top at 5m (16 feet) giving this divesite its Thai name "Hin Jom" The pinnacle is densely covered with sea anemones presenting an amazing view of sea's own version of the living carpet. The pinnacle has a north-south orientation, with a small slopped channel close to the south part.

The depth rages from 5 to 30m (16 to 100 feet). Because of the quantity, quality and the variety of marine life that lives in the beautiful coral and sea fans that cover the pinnacle, Anemone Reef is the choice site for divers and photographers.

Anemonefish and clownfish are common, as are big schools of snapper that cloud the pinnacle. Schools of yellowtail barracuda are also often seen circling the rock, together with groupers, oriental sweetlips, juvenile harlequin sweetlips, scorpionfish and soldierfish that flit among corals and crevices. Leopard Sharks, possible "escapees" from the famous divesites nearby, may also swim by from time to time.

Small critters such as tiger-tail seahorse are also found here on occasion. At the shallow areas near the mooring line, ornate ghost pipefish, nudibranchs and even anglerfish have been seen here.

Scuba diving day trip and snorkeling - Shark Point

Shark Point was named for the frequent sightings of Leopard Sharks in the area. Known as Hin Mu Sang bu locals, this dive site lies nearby the Anemone Reef and King Cruiser wreck, and is made up of 3 main pinnacles and is located 27km from Phuket.

This site has the most diversity of fish and corals among all Phuket and Phi Phi Islands dive sites. Each pinnacle is 15-20 meters away from others and has areas covered with striking purple and pink soft corals as well as beds of table coral, staghorn coral, coral head and huge sea fans. The average depth is 15m and maximum is 30m.

The dive usually starts from one pinnacle and finishes at the next depending of the currents. As there is a great diversity of marine life, it is almost impossible to cover all the 3 pinnacles in one dive.

As the site name suggests, Shark Point is the place to go for divers eager to spot Leopard shark. However sharks are not the only highlight of the site. Seahorse and ornate ghost pipefish provide divers with a pleasant surprise amont the sea fans and coral. Some spicies of marine life that inhabit the area are scorpionfish, lionfish, pufferfish, blue-ringed angelfish. On the rock and between corals, look for colorful nudibranchs, dancing shrimps and boxfish. Above the reef, there are also schools of barracuda and yellowline snappars.
